Hit $5,000 saved in cash last month and it felt way bigger than my old credit score ever did
I've been cash only for about 8 months now and I finally crossed the $5,000 mark just sitting in my fireproof box at home. Seeing that pile of actual paper money made me realize how invisible my savings used to be when it was just numbers on a screen. My credit score was 780 but I never actually felt that money you know? With cash I can see the literal envelope grow fatter every time I add to it. It's weirdly satisfying in a way that online banking notifications never were. Has anyone else noticed a huge mental shift when your cash stack hits a certain number?

Wait, $5,000 in a fireproof box at home? That's insane, man. I get the satisfaction part but aren't you scared of a fire actually happening or someone breaking in? My buddy had $2,000 cash stashed in his dresser and his apartment got robbed and it was just gone, no way to get it back. Credit score feels fake but at least the bank has insurance, you know? What happens if your house burns down with that box inside?

Actually read an article about this a while back, those fireproof boxes are only rated for like 30 minutes in a real house fire, so your cash is toast if the fire department takes too long. Same thing with burglars, a determined thief can just carry the whole box out and crack it open later. I'd rather keep my emergency fund spread between a bank and maybe a small amount hidden somewhere less obvious.
