Can we talk about how I carried $200 in twenties for 4 months and never once checked the bills
Bought coffee at a gas station in Toledo and the guy held my $20 up to the light and said it felt wrong, and sure enough I had 3 fakes sitting in my wallet the whole time. Now I check every bill over $10, anyone else get burned by not looking?
You ever rub the ink on a bill and have it smear? That's one of the first tells. Real money has ink that soaks into the paper, fakes usually sit right on top and feel slick or waxy. I got hit with two bad twenties from a guy at a yard sale years ago, and now I do the quick test every time: tilt it in the light for the strip, feel the collar on the portrait, and check that the paper has that rough cotton feel. If something seems off, just hand it back and say you only have a card. It's awkward for five seconds, way better than eating the loss later.
