Appreciation post: Heard a kid ask 'what's a checkbook?' at the hardware store

Made me think about how cash feels more real, like when I pull out exact change for a bag of mulch. Anyone else find cash helps them stick to a budget better than cards ever did?

That $150 for groceries a week is doing some heavy lifting Jake, most people I know spend more than that on just a single trip. But I get your point about the mental effect of cash. My grandpa always said if you have to break a $20 to buy a candy bar, you feel it way more than tapping your phone. It is weird how our brains treat plastic differently even though the money leaves the same bank account. You ever try the envelope system where you divide cash into different categories for the month?

Yeah, cash is the only thing that works for my brain. I take out a set amount for groceries every Monday. Once that $150 is gone from my wallet, I'm done for the week. Swiping a card just doesn't feel like spending real money, but handing over those twenties makes me think twice about every extra snack I toss in the cart.

Honestly that sounds like a lot of extra work just to buy food. You really feel that big of a difference between cash and card? I just set a budget in my banking app and it tracks everything for me. The money's gone either way, seems like making a special trip to the ATM every week is just adding more steps.
