A $40 cash emergency kit just saved me in an ATM dead zone

I went to the flea market in Sacramento last Tuesday and every single ATM was down, plus none of the vendors took cards. My usual trick of hitting the bank before heading out failed because I got caught in construction traffic. Now I keep a $40 stash hidden in my car visor, split into fives and ones, after that scare. It also came in handy when a farmer's market ran out of change last month. Anyone else keep a backup cash stash somewhere weird, or do you just carry more on purpose?
