Picked a $40 rebuild kit over a $300 junkyard trans for my old Civic, crossing my fingers
My 1998 Civic started slipping bad in third gear back in April. I had two choices: grab a used trans from a pull-a-part lot in Garland for $300, or try a $40 seal and bearing kit on the one I had. I went with the cheap kit since I already had the trans out and nothing to lose. Took me two weekends and a lot of cursing to get it back together, but it shifted clean for the next 8,000 miles. Anyone else rolled the dice on a rebuild kit instead of a swap, and how long did yours hold up?
Guessing you got lucky is the thing. Most of those cheap kits fail because people skip the part where you check the shaft and drum wear, and it sounds like you did the job right. But for every guy who gets 8,000 miles out of a $40 kit, there's three who are pulling the trans again in a month.
