Hot take: 173,000 miles on my $900 Civic is where the cheap fun stops

I bought a 2001 Civic with a blown head gasket for $900 and got almost two good years out of it, but right around 173,000 the transmission started slipping and the rust ate a rear strut tower. If your cheap rescue is pushing that number on the original drivetrain, budget for the second wave of repairs before you sink money into cosmetic stuff. Anyone else have a mileage number where their project car turned on them?
