Hit 200,000 miles on my $1,100 Tacoma and the check engine light came on the same day
I bought this 1998 Tacoma off a guy in Fresno for $1,100 because the bed was rusted through and it smoked on startup, and I just rolled past 200k on I-5 last Tuesday. The odometer hit the number, the light popped on, and now I'm staring at a P0420 code wondering if I should even bother. Did anyone else's cheap beater hit a big mileage mark and immediately fall apart, or is it just mine?
A P0420 is usually just your cat or an O2 sensor going bad, it doesn't mean the truck is dying on you. Cat codes like that are super common on high mileage Yotas and a lot of guys just clear it and keep driving. 200k on a Tacoma is barely broken in, so don't panic yet.
