Found out my $800 Civic gets 38 mpg and the $12k car I sold got 31

So I finally sat down and actually tracked my gas receipts for the last 3 fill ups in my 1998 Civic, and it came out to 38 mpg. My old 2016 hatch that I was paying $290 a month on only ever got 31 on the same drive to work. I used the calculator on fueleconomy.gov just to double check I wasn't doing the math wrong and it lined up. What cheap car surprised you with better numbers than something newer you owned?
