The week my 2007 Focus ate three alternators in five days
Last month in Phoenix my Ford Focus burned through alternators on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. First one I blamed on heat, second on a bad reman from AutoZone, but the third one made me check the wiring harness and found a chafed ground wire behind the battery tray. My debate is this: is it a bad car design when a $14 wire location can kill $180 parts repeatedly, or is that just normal wear for a 17 year old car? Anyone else chase a gremlin that kept costing more than the fix should have been?

2007 was the year my Chevy Cobalt started eating brake light bulbs like they were candy. I replaced the left one four times in two months before I noticed the trunk wiring boot was cracked and water was dripping right on the socket. Cost me about $8 a bulb but probably 6 hours of my life each time. Your wire chafing sounds like the same kind of issue, where the part that fails is just the symptom of something dumb hiding underneath. At least you found it before you traded in the car out of pure spite.
