The junkyard 2002 Taurus with 4 different door seals

Stopped at Pull-A-Part in Dayton last weekend looking for a window regulator for my truck. Walked past a beat up 2002 Taurus and the rear doors were wider open than they should be. Looked closer, the previous owner had rigged up four different types of weather stripping to keep water out. Foam tape, rubber from a fridge door, some kind of shower liner. All glued and screwed into the frame. I get it, those cars are known for the door seals shrinking and leaving gaps you could throw a cat through. But seeing a shade tree fix that involved cutting up appliances, that's a new level of dedication. Either Ford made a garbage seal or that guy really loved a $500 car. Anyone else seen a DIY fix that was more work than just buying the right part?

Honestly that's not even the craziest part. What gets me is the fridge door rubber because that stuff is like 2 inches thick and way too stiff for a car door. If anything that would make the water problem worse since it'd hold the door open a bit. But the real genius move is the shower liner, that's what actually got me thinking. That guy probably had a leaky shower too and figured if it keeps water in the tub it should keep it out of the car. And yeah he probably spent a whole Saturday on that instead of 20 minutes and 30 bucks at the parts store. But you gotta respect the mindset, it's not about the money at that point. It's about proving you can fix something with whatever junk you got laying around. That Taurus probably outlasted half the cars in that lot anyway.
