Just had this happen with my brother in law. He was putting the drain plug back with an impact gun. Stripped the threads on my car. The big one people miss is not replacing the crush washer. Costs like a dollar. Causes a slow drip that gets worse over time. Also make sure you're putting the right oil weight in. Buddy of mine used 10w30 in a car that needed 5w20 for years. Engine sounded terrible.

Ngl, @emmag40 you're right about most of that but I gotta push back a little on the crush washer thing. On a lot of modern cars those are actually single use and are designed to deform when you torque them down. Reusing them too many times can cause leaks but replacing them every single oil change is overkill for some makes. Just give it a quick check and replace it if it looks flattened or damaged.
