Had to choose between a factory water pump and a $40 aftermarket one for my 2002 Subaru

Picked the cheap one. It started leaking after 8 months. The cooling system on these cars already has enough problems without me gambling on parts. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way on a specific model?

The 03 Outback was a nightmare for that exact problem. Took me three tries and a lot of swearing to get the alignment right. A tip I picked up from a Subaru mechanic: mark the original bolts with a paint pen before you touch anything. That way you know exactly where they sat from the factory. The whole setup is way more sensitive than it should be, so even a half turn off can throw the whole thing out. Your mileage may vary but it saved me a ton of headache on the next one.
