Took me 8 years to realize I was stretching carpet the WRONG direction for patterned carpets

A customer pointed out her diamond pattern looked "wonky" and I spent 20 minutes staring at it before it clicked that I'd been stretching lengthwise instead of widthwise this whole time. Has anyone else had a dumb moment that made you question your whole career?

HOLD UP wait - you've been stretching carpet WRONG for EIGHT YEARS and nobody caught it until now? That's actually kind of wild, like how does that even work without looking totally off the whole time?

Took me a second to see how you figure that, but I actually think the way most people stretch carpet is overblown. You don't need a knee kicker for every room if the padding is solid and the seams are tight. I've done several houses where I just used a carpet stretcher once near the door and it's held fine for years. If it looks flat and doesn't ripple, it's not wrong.
