The change in carpet padding density over the last 15 years is wild to see.

I pulled up a 2006 job last week in Denver and the old 8lb rebond pad was still solid, while the 6lb stuff I put in 2018 was already crumbling - has anyone else noticed how much thinner and softer the standard pad has gotten since the big box stores took over?

I mean, is it really that deep though? Pad density changes a little over time, everything does, and most people probably wouldn't even notice if they weren't actively looking for it. Feels like one of those things where you remember the old stuff being way better just because it's been a minute.

Does anyone else remember when you could drop a bowling ball on the pad and it barely bounced, but now you just walk and it feels like a marshmallow? My knees sure do, I put in some cheap pad in my own place a few years ago and now I'm feeling every floorboard crack. Guess it's a good reminder that you really do get what you pay for, even if my wallet hates admitting it.
