That old timer who showed me why I was wrong about seam rollers

I used to think seam rollers were totally optional, just extra weight in the truck. Then I worked with this guy named Frank on a commercial carpet job at a bank downtown, must have been 60 years old and been laying carpet since before I was born. He watched me run a seam with just my knee kicker and a heat iron, then showed me how the roller pushes the fibers down so the seam tape actually bonds flat instead of bubbling up. Two months later I had to redo a seam in a rental house because I skipped the roller again, and that's when it finally stuck in my head. Any of you guys ever get stubborn about a tool and then eat crow later?

Frank's been at it long enough to know better, right? I'm curious though, after you had to redo that rental house seam, did you ever figure out exactly what the roller does differently than just the knee kicker? Because I've seen some guys swear they can get the same result with extra pressure on the iron, but I'm not buying it. I think the roller's real magic is how it locks the fibers into the tape while the adhesive is still hot, not just pushing them down after. What's your take on that part?

Ngl I gotta disagree with you on this one. The roller is just a glorified piece of rubber on a stick, it's not doing anything magical with the adhesive. If you're using a decent iron with consistent heat and you've got the technique down, a firm pass with the knee kicker right behind the iron does the exact same thing. The real issue is that people blame the tool when the real problem is they didn't wait for the glue to set properly before trimming. Honestly, I've seen guys use a flat piece of wood and a hammer to lock seams and they hold up fine for years. The roller's main advantage is saving your knees and wrists, not some adhesive wizardry. The fibers lock in because of heat and pressure timing, not because a specific tool is touching them.
