Got a $2,400 surprise on a stair runner job in Columbus when I finally checked the backing
I was prepping a stair runner job in Columbus last month and the homeowner kept saying the old carpet was fine. I pulled up a corner and the backing was so dry it cracked like a cracker in my hand. Turns out the stuff was 14 years old and the pad had basically turned to dust under it. The mill rep told me later that stair carpet wears out 3 times faster than floor carpet because of the concentrated foot traffic and the bend over the nosing. Now I always pop a corner before I quote a stair job. How are you all handling it when the customer swears the old stuff has life left?
