Dropped $340 on a power stretcher and now I'm wondering why I waited so long
Been doing carpet work for about 8 years, mostly solo side jobs after my regular crew days. Always rented a power stretcher from the local shop at $45 a day. Figured owning one was too much upfront. Finally bit the bullet last month after a rental came back with a busted wheel and I lost half a Saturday dealing with it.
Bought a used one off a retiring installer for $340. First job with it was a 12x15 living room in an old house with some weird humps in the subfloor. Had that carpet drum tight in one pass. No knee kicker wrestling match, no redoing the same wall three times.
I mean, for the price of about 7 rentals it's already paying for itself. But the real win is not having to plan jobs around shop hours or pray they have one available on a Friday. Anyone else finally break down and buy their own big tools like this? Worth it or did you stick with renting?

Grabbed my orbital sander the same way last year after renting one for every refinish job. Paid $260 used, first project was a staircase with some tight corners and the thing paid for itself in time saved alone. Now I just throw it in the truck and show up when I want, no calling around to see if the shop's got one left. Only downside is I've started finding excuses to sand things just to get my money's worth.
