Customer feedback made me stop fighting the grain on seams

I had a job last month in a condo in Arlington where the homeowner pointed out that my seam was slightly visible. I argued with her for a minute saying it was just the lighting. She was nice about it but insisted I look closer. I got down on my knees and realized she was right. I had been rushing the seam and not letting the carpet relax before cutting. Now I take an extra 10 minutes to walk the room and let everything settle before I make my first cut. Has anyone else had a customer catch something you missed?

Man, I felt that "slightly visible" part. That's the kind of thing that'll eat at you for days. It's rough when a customer catches something you missed, especially after you already argued about it. But good on her for being nice about it. Most people would just get mad or leave a bad review. I had a similar thing happen with a seam in a bedroom once. The lady pointed out a tiny shadow line I swore wasn't there. I felt like a fool, but I learned to stop trusting my eyes right away. Now I always grab a bright shop light and check seams from every angle before I pack up. Sometimes you just gotta swallow your pride.

Three times I checked that seam. Three times. Still missed it.
