Warning: A simple drop in a new build turned into a 4 hour crawl space hunt

I was finishing a custom home in Bend last month and dropped a brand new 16 oz Estwing hammer down a heating vent. Everyone said to just leave it, but I knew it would rattle forever. I spent four hours crawling under the house, moving insulation, and finally fishing it out with a magnet on a stick. Has anyone else had a small mistake eat up a whole afternoon?

That hammer would have been fine left alone.

I have to disagree about it being fine left alone. That old finish was worn down and didn't protect the wood very well. A fresh coat of oil brings out the grain and guards against moisture. It's a tool that gets used, so taking care of the handle just makes sense. A little maintenance can make it last for many more years.
