Two weeks in Seattle changed my mind on job site radios
I was over at a big commercial build in Seattle last month and this crew had an old beat up radio tuned to NPR all day. I always figured talk radio would kill the pace, but those guys were moving steady and calm, no one yelling over a playlist. Anyone else notice that background noise can make or break a crew's rhythm, or am I reading too much into it?
The "background noise can make or break a crew's rhythm" part got me thinking about how sound actually travels on site. On a big open build everyone hears the same thing, but once you're in a bunch of closed rooms the radio just turns into a muffled mess and the guys inside lose whatever calm it was giving them. Maybe the NPR thing worked because those rooms had ceiling tiles and drywall softening it, so it hit the ears more like white noise than talk.
