Pro tip: That 'simple' deck repair in Tacoma turned into a full rebuild after I found the ledger board was just nailed to rotten siding.
The homeowner kept saying it was fine last year, but three joists were completely spongy. Anyone have a go-to method for convincing clients a patch job won't cut it?

Just show them the rotted wood.

Remember when I thought a photo would do the trick? I actually took a screwdriver and poked right through a joist on camera for a client. The look on their face when it went in like butter, that's what finally got through. Now I just bring the screwdriver.

No way, I'd say photos are usually enough if you take good ones. @cooper.max sounds like you're going overboard when a clear shot of the rot should do the job just fine.
