Found out a 16d framing nail can shear under 100 lbs of side load
I was reading a load chart from the American Wood Council last week while planning a shed build, and it said a single 16d common nail can fail under about 100 lbs of force pushing sideways on the joint. I always figured nails were way stronger than that. It made me go back and check the hangers on my last deck job, because I leaned on plain nails in a few spots. So how do you all handle side loads on framing, do you switch to screws or add hardware?
