Cut a stair stringer wrong on a deck job in Tacoma and had to think fast

I was rushing and my math was off, so the first tread was a full inch too high. I had to recut the whole thing from fresh stock, which set me back half a day. Anyone have a good trick for double checking stringer layout before you make the cut?

Butcher paper is a great idea, you can even trace your actual stringer onto it first. Then you just lay the paper pattern on the new board, right?

Ugh, storyboard it on scrap plywood first.

Scrap plywood is a solid move. But honestly, a roll of cheap butcher paper is my go-to. You can just roll it out on the floor and sketch the whole thing out, then roll it back up.
