Warning: dropped $1,400 on a medical billing cert that got me zero callbacks in Charlotte
Back in 2021 I was burned out on retail and a guy at my church swore medical billing was the easy way into an office job, so I signed up for a 6 month online course. The course itself ran me $1,400 and I finished it in 4 months while working nights at a Target in Charlotte. I got the piece of paper, made a nice resume, and put out maybe 60 applications over the next 5 months. What nobody mentioned is that almost every entry level billing spot wants 2 years of experience and the two phone screens I got went to people who already worked front desk at a clinic. I still have the binder of practice claims sitting in my closet, and when I do the math I'm out around $1,400 plus about 300 hours of study time. If you're thinking about a cert like this, ask to talk to somebody actually doing the job first, not just the person selling the course. Did anybody here get lucky with a healthcare cert, or did I just pick the wrong one?
