That six month trial at the coffee shop that showed me what I really wanted

I left my IT desk job last April to try working at a local indie coffee shop in Portland. On my third week, the owner pulled me aside and said 'you make a good latte, but you keep fixing our broken espresso machine instead of calling the repair guy.' That comment stuck with me because I realized I missed the problem solving part of tech, just not the office politics. Has anyone else found a sideways career move that showed them what they actually wanted to do?

I had a bartender friend who quit to become a locksmith and realized she just liked talking to strangers all day. Now she manages a climbing gym and everyone loves her. Funny how the wrong job can point you to the right one.

Right?! It's like life uses detours to show us the direct path we actually wanted all along.
