My uncle the electrician told me to stop chasing passion and I'm still mad about it

He said I should pick a trade for the pension and benefits, not because I 'love' it. This was after I quit my accounting job to try graphic design. At the time I thought he was just bitter from 30 years of crawling in attics. But here I am 2 years later, struggling to pay for health insurance and wondering if steady paychecks actually have something going for them. Is there a middle ground nobody talks about between hating your job and being broke doing what you 'love'?

I read somewhere that the whole 'follow your passion' thing is actually pretty new as advice, like it didn't really exist before the 90s or something. People used to just find work that paid the bills and did their hobbies on the side. So maybe your uncle's not totally wrong about going for the pension first, then figuring out the fun stuff later when you're not stressing about money.
