My salary jumped 40% after I stopped only applying for jobs online

I was an accountant for 5 years and felt totally stuck, sending out resumes on LinkedIn every day. Last fall, I went to a local meetup for finance tech and just talked to people. One conversation there led to a referral for a data analyst role I never saw posted. I got an offer for $85k, way more than my old job. Has anyone else had luck finding a new path by just showing up in person?

I've noticed this same pattern playing out everywhere, not just in job hunting. Like how neighbors still prefer asking the guy down the street for a plumber recommendation instead of searching Google. Our brains are wired to trust people we've actually met, so when someone vouches for you in person that carries way more weight than a faceless application. The whole "hidden job market" thing is real, but honestly it's just the same way most important opportunities in life work - through relationships you build by being present and real with people.

It's the hidden job market... most good roles are filled through word of mouth before they ever get posted online. Sending resumes into a black hole is a losing game. You have to get out and let people know you're looking. A real conversation beats a perfect resume every single time. That's how I landed my last two jobs.

Stop sending resumes and start talking to real people.
