Is it smarter to take a pay cut for a job you actually like, or stick it out for the money?
I've been going back and forth on this for months after my friend left a $75k marketing job to work at a non-profit making $52k and she seems way happier now. But then my cousin stayed at his high-stress $90k engineering gig and just bought a house while I'm still renting with my decent but boring $60k office job. Do you think the tradeoff of less stress and more joy is worth losing out on real financial gains down the road, or am I just romanticizing the idea of a passion career?

I used to be all about chasing the money, full stop. But seeing my buddy leave a cushy tech job to do wildlife conservation for half the pay and actually be smiling on a Tuesday completely changed my mind. You said your friend seems way happier now and that really stuck with me because I always figured more money equals more happiness, but it clearly doesn't work that way for everyone. I think the real question is what kind of life you want to build, not just what paycheck you're bringing home. If you can cover your bills and still have a little left over, that extra money from a job you hate might cost you more than it's worth in the long run.

I mean, I get it but let's be real for a second. That cushy tech job probably lets him retire at 50 while wildlife conservation might mean he's still counting pennies at 65.
