A coffee shop chat in Denver made me rethink my whole career switch plan

I met a former teacher who switched to tech sales, and he told me 'I spent six months and $8k on a bootcamp before I even knew if I liked the work.' It made me pause my own enrollment and actually talk to people in the field first. Anyone else have a moment that made you stop and check your assumptions before a big change?

Man that's such a good point, how many people have you talked to so far? I almost did the same thing with a trade school program once. I ended up just asking to shadow a guy for a single day and it totally changed my mind. Spending a little time in the actual environment is way better than any sales pitch.

Yeah, "sales pitch" is just code for "please ignore the smell of burnt coffee and regret.

I shadowed a buddy for two days at his shop before I made any choice about getting into HVAC. Talked to about four people in the field first, but watching him work through a real install told me more than any of those conversations did. @abbyrobinson is right that the actual environment shows you things no one mentions on a tour. I noticed the little stuff like how they handle customers who are mad about the price or how much time they spend on paperwork. That experience saved me from jumping into something I would have hated after a month.
