Vent: I took the higher base pay over the bigger bonus and now I keep second guessing it
Last month I had two offers in Dallas, one at $74k with a 5% bonus and one at $68k with a 15% target, and I picked the higher base since my rent went up $180. Now I keep doing the math on what the bonus year could have looked like and wondering if I got too scared. For folks who've picked between steady pay and a fat bonus target, how did it shake out for you?
Ha, the bonus math is like a little slot machine in your head that never stops spinning. You did the smart thing though, a 15% target is just a wish until the company actually hits its numbers. My old job promised a fat bonus and then "restructured" it down to like half by the time December rolled around. Rent doesn't care about targets, it just wants its $180. So congrats on the boring, reliable win.
