Told my manager I wanted to move from support to data analytics, and he said no 4 times. Here is what finally worked.
I work at a mid size insurance company in Columbus and I have been in customer support for 3 years. Last year I started messing around with Excel and then SQL on my lunch breaks, just to see if I could do the analyst jobs I kept seeing posted internally. I applied to 6 openings over 8 months and got rejected from all of them, mostly because they said I had no real project experience. So I stopped applying and instead built a small dashboard tracking our team's call volume and wait times, then sent it to my manager without asking for anything. He forwarded it to the analytics director, and two weeks later she asked me to help clean up a real dataset for a claims project. I start as a junior analyst on the 15th with a 9 percent raise. Has anyone else gotten stuck in that loop where you need experience to get the job but nobody will give you the experience?
