Stopped doing 3 page cover letters, started getting way more callbacks

Used to write these massive essays for every job. My last one was 2 pages single spaced about my 'passion for synergy' or whatever. Got maybe 1 interview in 5 months. Then my buddy in HR straight up told me 'nobody reads that, we skim the first 5 lines and move on.' Switched to 3 short paragraphs max, like a casual email. 4 callbacks in the last month. Has anyone else found that shorter is actually better or is this just my industry?

My old boss in construction said the same thing, we always just read the top.
