My mentor told me I should stop chasing promotions and focus on learning instead

He said after 15 years in healthcare IT, the people who moved up fastest were the ones who took lateral moves to different departments, and now I'm wondering if I've been playing the game all wrong - has anyone else found that slowing down actually sped up their career?

That line about "lateral moves to different departments" is the real hidden wisdom here. When you shift sideways you pick up skills and connections that make you way more valuable than someone who just climbed the same ladder faster. Your mentor basically told you that building a wider base beats building a taller one every time.

15 years in healthcare IT and he learned that? @logan648 has the right take, that's wild.
