Just found a stat about job offers that changed my whole approach
I was reading a report from a hiring firm in Chicago last week. It said that over 60% of job offers come from people you already know, not from online applications. I found this on their website after a deep search. I always thought cold applying was the main way in. Now I'm trying to talk to more old coworkers and friends. Has anyone else seen their network actually lead to a real job?

That Chicago stat makes sense for me, my last three jobs all came from people I knew. Although @terrywalker has a point, one of those "people I knew" was just a guy I met once at a conference who vaguely remembered my face.

My buddy Dave got a job once just because he helped a guy jump-start his car in a parking lot. Turns out the guy was a regional manager for some logistics company, and they got to talking while waiting for the battery to charge. Three weeks later Dave had an interview. So yeah, sometimes it really is just being in the right place at the right time with a pair of jumper cables.

That Chicago firm's stat gets passed around a lot, but I've always wondered how they even measure that. Does a recruiter finding your LinkedIn after you applied online count as "someone you know"? Feels like a fuzzy number to base your whole strategy on.
