I used to think asking for a raise was just about showing up and asking. After my shop's slow season last year, I changed my whole approach.

My friend Mark at the auto shop learned this the hard way. He just walked in and asked for more money because he felt he deserved it, and his boss basically laughed him out of the office. The next time, he wrote down every extra thing he did, like training two new guys and handling all the ordering. He brought that list in and got the raise, no problem. It really showed me you gotta have your proof ready, not just a good feeling.

Solid advice from @hill.barbara, but the boss laughing him out is a red flag. A good manager should hear him out even without the list, then maybe ask for that proof. Mark's prep was smart, but the first reaction says more about that workplace.
