I tried being super direct in a salary talk and it totally blew up

So I had my yearly review last month and decided to just ask for a 15% raise point blank, no sugarcoating. My manager looked shocked and said the budget was tight, then basically ended the meeting early. I mean, I thought being clear was good, but maybe I came off too strong? Has anyone else had a salary conversation go sideways like that?

Yeah, that "direct approach" thing happens a lot. I see it with friends trying to settle plans or even just giving feedback. Going from zero to a hard demand puts people on the spot and they just shut down. Like if someone texts "this restaurant you picked was bad" instead of "the service was slow, maybe try somewhere else next time." You gotta give the other person a way to save face, or they just get defensive and it's over.

Oof, that direct approach can really backfire sometimes!
