I took a pay cut for a job with better work-life balance and now I am more stressed

Everyone says taking less money for less hours is the smart move. I did that 8 months ago, dropped from 45 hours a week to 32 at a smaller dental office. Problem is, now I have way less control over my schedule and they pack more patients into those 32 hours than my old job did in 45. Has anyone else found that trading hours for flexibility just trades one kind of stress for another?

Is it really that serious, though? You dropped 13 hours a week. That's a big chunk of time, even if you feel packed in. Take a step back and ask if the stress you feel now is actually worse than grinding through 45 hours. Sometimes the grass is just different, not better. If you're truly miserable, sure, look for something else. But an extra 13 hours of your life is a pretty solid trade for some extra paperwork and a few more patients per hour.

Oh wow, you actually made me rethink my whole take on this. I used to be all about the "more hours = more money = worth it" mindset, but hearing you break down the 13 hour trade off like that really hit home. I think I was caught up in the idea that burnout is just part of the deal, but you're right, an extra afternoon off every week is literally a third of my waking life back. I guess I never realized how much those hours add up until you put it that way. It's not just about the stress now versus the stress before, it's about actually having space to breathe instead of just surviving the week. So yeah, you changed my mind on this one, I'm gonna stop feeling guilty for taking the lighter schedule.
