Hit 5 years at my store and nobody cared but it actually mattered to me

Most people say you should job hop every 2 or 3 years to get ahead. I was set on that plan until I hit the 5 year mark at the same hardware store recently. Walking in and knowing exactly where every single SKU lives saved me about 30 minutes a day easy. New hires come to me with questions instead of running around lost for an hour. I also built real trust with regulars who ask for me by name now and that turns into bigger sales without even trying. My pay is about $3 less than what I could get somewhere new but I get first pick of shifts and my boss lets me order inventory without checking. Nobody threw me a party or gave me a plaque but that longevity gave me quiet control over my day that job hopping would never offer. Has anyone else stuck around longer than planned and found it paid off in small ways?

Wait is that really how it works though? I used to be ALL about switching jobs every couple years for the pay bump. Thought anyone who stayed put was leaving money on the table. But reading this actually makes me second guess that whole mindset. The quiet control stuff you mentioned like picking your own shifts and not having someone breathe down your neck about inventory sounds way more valuable than I used to think. I guess there is something to be said for building a place where you basically run your own little world without needing a title for it. Thanks for making me rethink things honestly.

My buddy stayed at a warehouse 5 years just for the first pick on vacation weeks lol.
