Back in 2012, I thought networking events were just awkward small talk.

Then a casual chat at one in Phoenix led to a job offer that doubled my salary. Anyone else have a career thing they were totally wrong about?

How many times have I rolled my eyes at the whole "networking happens anywhere" line? Used to think it was just talk. But hearing stories like your buddy's, @patricia_hayes, actually makes me believe it. I guess the real trick is just being ready to talk to anyone, anytime, without sounding like you're trying to sell something. Changes how you think about those boring daily errands.
