Warning: that $90 junkyard transmission I almost grabbed had a 4 bolt bellhousing, not 6
Spent two Saturdays hunting for a cheap 5 speed for my 94 Civic at the Pick n Pull in San Antonio and just happened to count the bellhousing bolts on a wrecked 97 before I pulled it, which is how I learned Honda changed the bolt pattern on the D series in 96 and saved myself dragging home a paperweight, so does anyone know which years actually swap into a 94 without a new clutch and mounts?
A buddy of mine back in like 2009 drove three hours to a yard in Dallas for a "deal" on a D16 trans and ate the same lesson. He gets it home, pops the hood, and the bellhousing only lines up on four holes instead of the six he needed for his 94 coupe, so he's out the gas money and the core charge both. The cutoff is right where you found it, 96 and up went to the different pattern, so for your 94 you want a 92 to 95 D series box, and you can pull from a Del Sol or a 92 to 95 Civic of almost any trim as long as it's a D. Your clutch and flywheel stay, the mounts stay, it just bolts up, that's the whole point of staying inside that window. The 96 to 00 units will bolt to the block on some combos but the mount and clutch stuff gets weird and it's not worth the headache when the right one is out there. Count the holes before you pay, every single time, because the yard guys sure aren't going to catch it for you.
