Rant: my junkyard coilovers blew a seal on the way to work this Tue

Found a set of coilovers at the Pick-n-Pull in Fresno for $60 and figured I was set, but the whole week turned into a mess. Tuesday morning one rear strut started clunking and leaking oil all over my driveway before I even hit the freeway. Ended up crawling under it with a $12 seal kit and a borrowed spring compressor just to get to work by 9. Anyone else had a cheap junkyard part turn a normal week into a total nightmare, and how do you spot the dead ones before you buy?
