PSA: I put a $40 junkyard throttle body on my truck and lost 3 mpg, here's what I wish I knew
Pulled a throttle body off a wrecked 2003 Silverado at Pick-a-Part in Rancho Cordova for $40 because my original was whistling at idle. Swapped it in on a Saturday and the whistle went away, but my gas mileage dropped from 17 to 14 over the next two tanks. Turns out the junkyard one had a worn TPS sensor giving the computer bad readings, so it was dumping extra fuel the whole time. I ended up cleaning my original and putting it back, and I'm back to 17. Anyone else had a cheap part swap bite them in a way they didn't see coming?
The real trap with used throttle bodies isnt just the TPS, its that the computer already learned the worn sensor's bad habits and wont unlearn them fast. Even after you fix the problem, those fuel trims stay stuck until you clear them or drive a few hundred miles. So a guy could swap a good part in, still see bad mileage, and blame the wrong thing.
