Junkyard in Phoenix sold me a transmission with no warranty, 5 weeks later it started screaming
Pulled a 4L60E from a 2002 Silverado at Pick-N-Pull for $180, cleaned it up and swapped it into my '99 Chevy. Now it's making this awful whine in 3rd gear, anyone know if those junkyard cores are even worth rebuilding on a budget?

Oh man, that whine in 3rd is probably the 3-4 clutch pack starting to go. I've been down that road before. Actually pulled a 4L60E from a '01 Tahoe that looked clean on the outside but ended up having a cracked sun shell I didn't catch until I had it halfway installed. Spent more time and money swapping it back out than if I'd just bought a reman. In my experience those junkyard cores can be a total crapshoot, your mileage may vary though. Some guys have great luck, but for me it's always the ones that look perfect that bite you in the wallet later.

Exactly what you're saying @wyattmitchell reminds me of that old saying about how the things that look the cleanest usually have the most hidden problems, I've seen it with used transmissions and even with old house appliances where the outside is spotless but the inside is about to blow. It's like there's some kind of universal law that the more careful someone is about making something look perfect on the surface, the more they're hiding something nasty underneath. You just never really know what you're getting until you've already committed time and money to it.
