A buddy from my old call center told me to never apologize online after getting piled on, and 4 friends proved him wrong
Back in 2021 a guy I worked with at a call center in Tulsa warned me that saying sorry during an online backlash just gives the mob more ammo. So last spring when a local baker got dragged for an old tweet, I was sure he was done for. She posted a short video admitting the joke was dumb, no excuses, and the whole thing fizzled out in about 48 hours. Anyone else seen a real sorry actually work, or does it usually backfire?
The part your buddy got wrong is that it's not the apology itself, it's what's behind it. A fake sorry with a bunch of excuses is blood in the water, everybody can smell it and they tear you apart harder. But a real one where you just own it flat out and don't blame anyone else, that takes the fun out of it for the mob. There's nothing left to fight, you know? The baker did it right because she didn't grovel or write some long sob story, she just said yeah that was dumb and moved on. People respect that way more than a 12 paragraph notes app thing, and honestly the longer the apology the more it looks like you're still trying to argue. Short, real, no excuses. That's the whole trick.
