Spent 2 years ignoring my tent's rainfly thinking it was optional

I was camping near Lake Tahoe last spring and got soaked during a random downpour. Tried tightening my tent's rainfly (you know, the one that came with it) but water still leaked through the seams. A guy at the campsite pointed out I had it upside down the whole time. I felt like an idiot, but man, a $10 tube of seam sealer would have saved me so much misery. Anyone else have a facepalm moment with basic gear they overlooked?

That seam sealer trick is one of those things nobody tells you until after you've already been through a storm. So you just flip the rainfly and apply some sealer, and suddenly your tent is actually waterproof? I've got an old Eureka tent from 2018 that's never leaked, but I've never touched the seams. Did you have to reapply it after a few trips, or does that tube last for years if you store the tent right?

Funny how fixing one small thing can save you years of hassle, like when you finally tighten that loose screw on a squeaky door.
