A ranger in Yosemite saw my old camp stove and said 'That thing's a survivor'.

It was a Coleman from 1998 that my dad gave me, and he told me a story about fixing the same model with a paperclip in a storm. Anyone else have gear that's older than they are?

Ever read about that guy who still uses his grandfather's WW2 mess kit? It was a story in an old camping magazine. The aluminum was worn thin in spots, but he said it boiled water faster than anything new. That kind of history in an object is pretty special.

My great uncle had a canteen from 1944 that he used up until the 90s. The canvas cover was all frayed and stained but the metal inside was still solid. @matthew_reed50 I totally get what you mean about that history being special. My uncle used to say every scratch on it had a story, even if he couldn't remember them all. There's just something about using something that's been through real stuff that makes it feel more alive than brand new gear.

Honestly, that's a family heirloom now.
