A guy at the campsite showed me his tarp knot and I've been doing it wrong forever

Was out at Shenandoah last weekend and this older fella had this super clean ridgeline setup, no sag even with morning dew. He showed me some knot called a trucker's hitch with a half hitch backup, took maybe 20 seconds to tie. I've been using cheap plastic tensioners from a dollar store and they slipped on the second night every single time. Bought 20 feet of paracord from him for 5 bucks and practiced at home until muscle memory kicked in. Has anyone else ditched hardware for knots on their tarp, or am I overthinking this whole thing?

Did you try the knot with wet rope, that's how I finally got my setup to hold?
