Watching a new guy pre drill every hole on a 40 ft pole run made me rethink my whole setup
Rode along with a kid named Marcus last Tuesday on a job out in Mesa and he pre drilled and vacuumed every single hole before running a single line. I've been doing this 11 years and always just drilled and blew the dust out with my mouth, but his way took maybe 10 extra minutes and zero callbacks. Anyone else switched their whole process because of something a rookie did?
The idea that pre drilling and vacuuming every hole only takes "maybe 10 extra minutes" on a 40 ft run is not quite right. I ran the math one time out of spite because a helper swore it was faster, and on a 40 footer with 30 or so holes you're looking at closer to 20 to 30 minutes once you count swapping bits, hauling the vac around, and dumping the canister twice. It's still worth it, no argument there, because callbacks eat way more than half an hour of your day. But the "10 minutes" part is what tricks guys into skipping it when they're behind schedule. Under promise on the time and the habit actually sticks.
