Spliced a 12 strand fiber line in the rain last Tuesday and lost 3 hours to one dirty connector
Last Tuesday I was up on a pole in Fort Collins finishing a 12 strand single mode run when the sky just opened up. I had my fusion splicer under a tarp and thought I was fine, but one of my connectors got grit in it from the wind and my loss numbers were garbage on two strands. I must have re-cleaned and re-spliced those same fibers four times before I realized the connector itself was the problem, not my work. Ended up swapping it out and got 0.02 dB on all 12, but I burned about 3 hours and my hands were numb by the end. Has anyone found a cleaning kit that actually holds up when you're splicing in bad weather, or do you just reschedule when it looks like rain?
