Rant: My crew chief said to always use the big drill for wall plates, and I'm glad I didn't listen

He told me last month, 'You need the power, just use the half-inch for every plate screw, it's faster.' I tried it on a drywall job in Springfield and it cracked three plates before I even got the screw tight. Switched back to my little 12-volt driver with a clutch set low, and finished the rest without a single issue. Has anyone else found that less power is better for finish work?

Tell me about it. I once tried to countersink some cabinet screws with an impact driver because my foreman said it was fine. Ended up putting a screw right through the back panel like it was butter. My ego and that cabinet door were both full of holes that day. A little driver with a clutch is basically a safety net for when your brain checks out.

Holy cow, right through the back panel?! That's brutal. I can just picture the look on your face when it happened. A clutch isn't just a safety net, it's a full-on job saver.
